I recently heard a speaker say, "Setbacks are sometimes God's setups for great comebacks." I wish I had said that. All of us experience setbacks. Eventually, we all will experience failure in some area of life. Failure is just a part of life. Setbacks happen when you put yourself in a position to lose. Many times we’re tempted to just play it safe and not take risks. The problem with playing is safe is that if you don't have the chance to fail, you have no chance to win. You will never experience success until you put yourself in a position to fail. So risking failures and setbacks is just a part of life for anyone who desires to achieve. Everyone will experience failure, but not everyone will learn from failure.
It is tragic that many times people allow past failures to dominate their present and poison their future. They may go on for years, letting their past mistakes, failures, and setbacks control them.
What should do you do when setbacks come? Paul set a pretty good example in his own life. He had lots of things in his past that could have dragged him down if he had let them. But listen to what he said about those things in his past… He said, "...This one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. (Phil. 3:13-14)
Hear that? He forgot those things which were behind him and reached toward the future opportunities. He didn’t erase the memory of them from his mind, but he forgot them to the extent that they did not control his life’s direction. Instead of being held back by his past he was drawn by his future.
Don't let past circumstances abort your future opportunities. Whatever is the dominate focus of your mind will take you in a direction. If you're constantly focused on the past you can never move forward. You cannot reach toward the future if your hands are full of the past. Don’t get stuck, living in the shadow of past circumstances or events.
Whatever you feed lives, whatever you starve dies. Don't nurture past failures and hurts. Starve them and let them die. Feed and nurture your dreams and possibilities. Embrace the future.
If you’ve been hurt in the past or if you’ve experienced some sort of failure, welcome to the human race. Forget it and move on. Remember, setbacks can be God's setups for a great comeback.
